Square Capital builds products that expand access to credit, with a focus on historically underserved customers. We started by providing investment loans to the small businesses that use Square for credit card payments. Our proprietary data and intuitive product delivery has helped us originate over $2.5 billion in just four years. And Capital is just getting started.
This Product Manager will work on Capital growth initiatives, finding strategic ways to marshal Square’s proprietary data, technology, and customer base to increase access to capital for historically underserved customers. Their first ‘tour of duty’ will be exploring Square’s entry into consumer lending. In this role, you will collaborate closely with engineers, designers, data scientists, and other cross-functional team members to design, ship, and refine key product features that provide a frictionless financing experience for Square Sellers and their customers.
Conduct extensive research to understand customer needs and existing solutions
Use that research to craft a compelling product vision and strategy
Plan, prioritize, and deliver achievable projects against that vision and strategy
Thoughtfully define and communicate project goals, requirements, and constraints
Ownership - You own the goal of delivering a wonderful customer experience. You commission great work cross-functionally, from teams like engineering, design, data science, operations, marketing, and legal. Then you put in whatever else is required to make sure the next part of your product gets shipped in a way that delights the customer and makes the whole team proud that they worked on it.
Judgment - You’re a full-stack decision-maker. Your team trusts your guidance on questions like this year’s strategy, this month’s roadmap, this week’s sprint plan. To do this, you can pull your own data (SQL) and analyze it (Excel/Sheets) to come up with counterintuitive insights. When there isn’t enough data, you conduct top-notch qualitative research to help understand what the customer is trying to do and what your product needs in order help them achieve that. Plus, you can prioritize JIRA tickets with your eyes closed.
Leadership - You infuse positive energy into your work. People who have worked with you before are excited to do so again. You can make challenging prioritization decisions, but you are open-minded and transparent in the process of making those decisions. Other PMs look to you for mentorship and advice. The executive team can trust you to make wise decisions about deploying resources on your team: pulling back if you find new signals that challenge your original hypothesis, and doubling down when you see stronger traction than you expected.
Experience - You’ve served as a product manager at a technology company for at least 5 years. This means you have been directly responsible for defining the work of engineers and designers in delivering a technology product. You can easily point to the customer pain point(s) that your product solved, and how it solved that pain better than others. You can describe major mistakes that you’ve made, and how you operate differently now as a result. Time spent on consumer financial products is a strong plus, but not a strict requirement.
