Computer managers are professionals who administer and manage the way computer professionals work. They perform an important role as they develop in devising various policies and work processes. They need to stay abreast with latest technological advancement and must also have a management background. They are also called IT managers and find placement in most IT and ITES companies.

Responsibilities of a Computer Manager

They provide direction to all other employees by proposing new policies and improving the existing ones. They also make plans in order to ensure that coordination of all the activities in one department happens in a streamlined way. For example, information system, computer programming, electronic data and it's processing, analysis of systems, etc. They need to report to the higher authority about the progress of work or any discrepancy.



As a computer manager it would be your duty to manage activities and computer processes in the manufacturing, government, educational and other institutions. They are mostly in charge of all the facilities that possess and involve system analysis, programmers, equipment operations etc.

He or she must ensure that there are all the necessary personnel and equipment in various departments so that work is carried out well. The development of budgets and also the planning of all new purchases of all of the equipment are done by the computer managers. Computer managers need to spend long working hours in the office as they need to meet stringent deadlines. Sometimes they also need to work on weekends.

Skills Required Being a Computer Manager

Computer managers and also system managers should possess general management, knowledge of the various computer systems of the company and also the perfect information about all the system analysis and the programming. As a computer manager, one must have the ability to communicate and interact with the heads of all the other departments in the firm and other staff members. They must have the ability to record all requirements of the department in a computer system. They must have the leadership quality to direct the staff in the information technology to work on all the procedures given by the computer manager.

Educational Requirements

To be a computer manager, one must possess a bachelor's degree in computers along with a management degree or diploma. Then apart form these, one must also possess programming and system analysis knowledge. If you are opting for small firms then having a degree is not mandatory but then he or she must have some computer related experience. If one has degree in programming, mathematics, business etc then he or she would have higher chance in this field. If you want to become a computer manager in a large firm, then having an MBA degree would be of great help.

The average hourly wage that most of the computer managers get is around $57.07 per hour and an annual salary of around $68,750-$118,710, therefore this field pays well and has great opportunities and job prospects.
